Climate and Culture Cartoon
There is no department or function in any organization which helps to shape the climate and culture, but in some ways this is a pity because it can be so important to the success of an enterprise. After all, a negative culture can substantially lower team morale and create a “political” climate while a positive culture can create a climate in which people want to give of their best and therefore put in more effort.
A negative or difficult climate is one that might be described as authoritarian, discriminatory, harsh, political or rule-bound perhaps (and who would want to work in such a place?). A positive climate, on the other hand, might be described as action-oriented, cooperative, democratic, fair, friendly and open perhaps (and wouldn’t many more people like working in such a place or want to join such an enterprise?).
Unfortunately, we seem to have many climates or cultures that are more like the former than the latter, especially the bigger an organization becomes. There is therefore an excellent opportunity to change the culture for the better for almost every enterprise. This may seem like a difficult thing to do, but cultures are shaped by individuals and the way in which they act towards one another. If people therefore want a better and more healthy, positive and productive climate, then it is worth talking about what this could look like, and then working hard collectively to bring it into being.
