Communication, or the ability to influence others successfully, tends to oil the wheel of organizational success. This communication diagram, offers a simple model to help improve communication by suggesting that we can draw a “star” around two axes.
The first axis is about the focus we place on the person to who we are communicating (and contrasts clarity of message irrespective of who the person is at one end of the continuum and empathy and a high quality relationship being established with the person at the other).
The second axis is about the focus we place on the situation about we are communicating. Here, the scale runs from showing appreciation for the concerns of people in the situation at one end of the continuum and understanding the actual situation in which they my find themselves at the other.
This star diagram helps us to appreciate that in all communications, the requirement may include the need to clarify, appreciate, empathize and understand and within the star points, to lead, inspire, manage and motivate. The more that both parties appreciate this, the better the communication is likely to be.
